OVERVIEW
Cambio en Clave is the largest salsa project in Puerto Rico that maximizes the potential of music and socially integrates people through dancing classes.
The organization uses their Facebook Fan Page to promote their events, yet due to a high demand of content and the need to publish their events globally, the founders were determined to create an “user- friendly” mobile application.
MY ROLE
As the lead Product Designer, my role consisted in collaborating with the ideation, design and prototyping of the new product. I had the opportunity to collaborate with the marketing manager and the company owner of the Cambio en Clave organization.
We worked together on identifying opportunities for content creation based on user needs. I went through the process of creating the information architecture, prototypes in XCODE with assets for iOS developer and the visual design.

CHALLENGE & OPPORTUNITIES
The initial architecture of the design was fragmented and unorganized. My task was to categorize all the information to make it accessible and understandable to the audience. Some of the techniques I used to obtain the final product included:
Develop the content strategy
A full design of the application for iPhone:
UX Design and Architecture
UI Design and Prototyping
Visual Design
RESEARCH & WIREFRAMES
Conducted in-depth user research with:
Contextual inquiries
Ethnographic research
I had the opportunity to take salsa classes with Cambio en Clave, from which I had the full chance to get immersed in the experience and do the research to understand the users and their needs. As a result I was able to build two different types of user personas.
EXPLORING USER FLOWS & SITE MAPS
Content Analysis
During this phase, I explored multiple task flows, assessed possible points of user frustration and concluded with a segmented control as the home page to start the navigation.
Sketching and Wireframing
The interface’s design was based on a segmented control, which allows users to have a smooth visual translation between iPhone and Android platforms. This design allows users to remain on the same page, shortening steps and with easy recognition of the Events and Places’ section. The next step of this project included the creation of an Android application
VISUAL DESIGN
During the graphic design phase I studied the branding and marketing content of Cambio en Clave organization.
As part of the ethnographic research, I studied the most common imagery that the salsa dance places tend to use to promote their events.
RESULTS
After evaluating the sketching and testing different iterations of the app, I completed the application’s design based on:
Navigation at the top of the screen for easier access to the Events and Places (segmented control).
Creating an easy access to a user profile and map, while allowing a creative way to access information and search for the closest salsa dance places based on the current location.
DELIVERABLES
High fidelity moclups
Balsamiq prototype
XCODE prototype
Assets for iOS App
App content strategy
This project allowed me to learn how to build full prototypes in XCODE and learn the human interface guidelines for iOS.
FUTURE | NEXT STEPS
The Cambio en Clave organization needs to raise more funding to develop the application and work with the Department of Tourism of Puerto Rico to coordinate the integration of the experience with tourists.
